6pm: Private Karate Lesson


I am really proud of the way I worked out, stuck to the plan and ate pretty clean today.

Workout Log:

645am: Spinning
630pm: Karate

I love this pic (no, it isn’t me..yet!). Today was a GREAT day. Not that anything has changed good, bad or otherwise, but my attitude just seems to have adjusted back to positive after a couple of “blah” weeks.

I hit spin class today and it was a good workout. I now have to factor in de-icing my windows into my time frame for the 645am class, but today wasn’t too bad. The music was “off” again for me, lots of 80’s and 90’s rock type stuff, better than last time, but not inspirational. I guess you can’t have it all!

I felt invogorated after spin class but also sore from Sunday’s heavy lifting session. I can feel my biceps and triceps for sure. They’re buried under flab, but they are in there!

I had to force myself to go to karate. It is no longer “novel” its now “work” and I found my attention wandering the last two weeks also hard to motivate myself when “blah” but my goal is to make it through Christmas and if I don’t like it, then I’ll move on to something else or just fill in with spin/run/lift. Tonight was hard, the crunches, the calisthenics, the kata…but I still felt like I had pushed myself and learned something after class. That is what I have to remember on those days that I want it to be easy. I learned the first Konshin Kata and have 3 more to go. The good news is that the footwork for the next three are the same, it is the blocks/punches that change. I have a private lesson with one of my favorite Senpei on Friday night to go over the other piece that I’ve been working on.

I’m trying to decide if I want to do spin on Tuesday or Treadmill train. I need to be careful that I don’t overdo it and injur myself and end up back on the bench. I also need to work on doing more weight training on my lower body.

My goals for this week:

Sunday: cardio (done!) + lift (done!)

Monday: Spin (done!) + karate (done!)

Tuesday: Karate + Cardio

Weds: Spin + Lift

Thurs: Karate

Friday: Spin + Karate (private tutoring)

1240: Salad w/ Tuna + grilled chicken (one onion ring!)
2pm: 1 choc chip cookie (this was hard!)

Damn it felt good to work up a sweat today. I have truly missed working out. Wow. I guess I really am changing and becoming an athlete again. It’s like I’m craving being in shape now!

Step Mill Machine: 40 mins
Karate Class: 60 mins

I was feeling run down most of the week, but I decided to push myself this morning. My neck still hurts too, but I just can’t take being out of the gym and not being active anymore. The step mill felt great and karate was a lot of fun.

I also realized that my main gym has spinning classes 7 days a week! The class I’m taking now is at Dartmouth undergrad M, W, F and I’d love to do some spinning on the weekends! Yay!

I gave myself 2 stars today and I’m planning to hit the spin class and lift tomorrow.

I read an article yesterday that also confirmed what I was feeling, gotta cut those sodas out. I haven’t had much in the last few months but the last week I’ve been sucking them down. Even the diet ones aren’t good for you! Back to the H2O!

Woke up feeling funky at about 3am. Probably due to the cognac and medium rare burger I had last night. I guess my days of liquor and beef are over! Rolled around in bed until 10am trying to decide how I felt and if I wanted to workout before Karate, if I wanted to go to karate, how many calories I set myself back last night, etc.

Eventually I pulled it together.

1045am: Karate (moderate difficulty/cardio)
1215am: Weightlifiting Circuit

Jump Rope: 4 sets of 50-60 rotations between weight training circuits 

Bench press: 3 sets at 20 lbs; 4th set at 30 lbs!!
21’s (Biceps): 3 sets at 30 lbs; 4th set at 40 lbs (tough!)
Closed Grip Bench Press: 3 sets at 30 lbs; 4th set at 40 lbs
Skull Crushers: 3 sets at 30 lbs; 4th set at 40 lbs
Triceps pulldown (rope) 4 sets at 40-60 lbs
Lat Pulldowns: 4 sets at 60 lbs!! I think this is a new high. I need to go back and look at workout logs.

Food Log
12noon: Slimfast Optima (drank on way to gym from Karate)
230pm: 2 string cheese + large slim jim jerky

530pm: Small Beef Stew

645pm: Sheppard’s Pie + Chic Pea Salad + Wine

900pm: small “no pudge” brownie

Karate was alot of fun again. Not as cardio intense today as it has been, more on techniques and stuff. I ran through the 15 basics over and over w/ Sensei Lucy and got a little bit of Bo training in at the end. I did have the energy to lift after karate but decided to hold cardio until Sunday or monday depending on how I feel tomorrow.

The scale is showing a little bit of a dip, but I haven’t broken into the 250’s yet which is my next milestone. at 250 lbs I’ll have lost 10% of my starting body weight. Yeah, no more cognac and burgers for me!

Woke up feeling refreshed mentally, but physically my body is still sore and tired from Mon/Tues/Weds workouts! Slept in and only have karate tonite. Forgot to eat breakfast (who forgets to eat?) lol.

I think I need more H2O but forgot my water bottle!

12noon: vegan soy cutlet parmesean w/ veggies

300pm: Large Coffee w/ half & half

645pm: small portion of beef & broccoli and hot & sour seafood soup

945pm: chicken sausage, 8 peanut butter crackers + skim milk

**post Karate update. I made it to Karate tonight and I really had my doubts as my body is/was sore, but in the good way and I was kind of sleepy but I had some errands to run to help a friend who is sick and that kept my momentum up. Class was intense again. More Kumite (sparring) which is basically non-stop cardio. At the end of class, Sensei Australia (not his real name), said “you’ve got natural athletic ability, raw talent, people are looking forward to working with you…”  Wow!! How cool is that? I told him I studied a semester of Uechi-Ryu. It is hard and I have alot to learn just to get to the beginning of learning. But what a motivating moment!  I won’t make tomorrow (fri) b/c its during the day and I have a ton of work to do, but I’m definitely going Saturday instead of the weightlifting clinic. I have class at 1045 for Karate and then a 230pm Piano lesson.

Woke up hungry as all get out! I nibbled and snacked last night after the gym (slimfast Optima shake, lowfat string cheese and 3 peanut butter crackers). I need to ween my system off the white flour and fried breading it got this weekend and then my hunger will abate again I’m sure.  I need to snack “cleaner” and step up my cardio intensity. I got on the WW scale today and was down .2 lbs lol, which after a weekend of wine and fried chicken is OKAY with me! But I want to see some more drastic results, and last week, by the end of the week I could really FEEL that I was “smaller.”

So far today I’ve been eating clean, but I’m hungrier than I was last week.

830 am: coffee w/ skim and splenda + Banana

1145 am: Slimfast Optima (on the way to Weight Watchers!)

130 pm: Salad w/ grilled chicken (no boiled eggs, no cheese)

500pm: Slimfast Optima

900pm: Spinach w/ onions and chicken sausage (sauteed)

930pm: 2 Qhourn “chicken” nuggets (fake chicken)

I started my “cycle” this morning, so I’m glad in that it burns up tons of calories, but I also have to wear a white karate uniform….great! lol.

This morning I rested instead of going to the gym. I figured a double workout yesterday and the prospect of Karate tonight was good enough reason not to push it.

I am not so worried about not being that hungry anymore. I spoke with a colleague who said maybe physically and psychologically my body is over the worst of the compulsive need to overeat. I’m going to claim this.

Food Log:
8am Breakfast: Rice Dream smoothie w/ blackberries & banana
1030 Snack: Eggs w/ Salsa & bacon
4pm Lunch: Italian Sausage soup (scooped out most of the pasta) & small salad
6pm Cocktail hour (lol): chips and salsa w/ the works + 7 chicken strips

I know I need to clean up my eating to bust out of the 260’s and down into the 250’s. I’ve been open to trying new activities and I am also working on being consistent and going even when I don’t “feel” like it.

I left work at 3pm today and went to the local bike shop and got a padded bike seat for my spinning class ($18 and if it works, it’ll be worth every damn dime).

I bought the pass to formally join the spinning class and tried to join the local gym. The pass wasn’t a problem but the gym pass was, I’ll have to finagle some stuff tomorrow. I question joining another gym, but it is closer to the house in case its too bad for me to drive to RVC, and it has an indoor track and basketball courts which will come in handy when it gets cold (or I should say colder).

I STILL haven’t ordered my treadmill. Mainly b/c I don’t drive to work and I need my car to get over to Lebanon to get to Sears and I usually don’t slow down that much until well after 8pm.

The spin class ends December 18th. But now I also need to decide if I am going to commit to Karate. It’s $100/mo. and honestly the money itself isn’t the problem, its that I don’t want to commit to something and not follow through. It has been 3 classes and I do like it. Some stuff is definitely hard at my weight and physical conditioning, but everyone has been wonderful and says to just relax and have fun.

The other thing is that I miss my weight training this week. I haven’t worked the weights since saturday.

Wow. I actually made it to Karate class tonight. I was worried about how out of shape I am, but I went and it was FUN. The first exercise we did to get warmed up I was really good at and the Sensei was like “you’ve got a sports background” and I told him I did play basketball in HS and that does wonders for hand eye coordination!

We did this game/exercise where we were in a circle (about 15 of us) and we had this weighted ball (about 5-8 lbs) that we tossed around as fast as we could randomly. The goal is to NOT drop this ball. If you do you have to exit the circle and do a push up and then return. At the end we did eliminations. I made it down to the last 4!

We did some practice “attacks” and that was FUN too. Kicking exercises were tough, but good for lower body. I was seriously sweating up in there!

I’m probably going to go to one or two more sessions before I commit. What a great day. Two new things I’ve tried and both were interesting enough that I’ll be back again. God willing and the creek don’t rise as we say in the south!

And yes, yes I DID give myself TWO stars today.

Whew. Went to the gym and hit the treadmill for 35 minutes and THEN went to an introductory Karate class. Damn, that kicked my butt. Karate made me feel so out of shape in so many ways, but I can see why this would be a great cross-training activity. I’m going to try it out for a month and see how I like it.

I also found out one of my colleagues is a spinning instructor on campus. She invited me to come and try it out and I plan to do that next week.

So, I’m working on it. The good news is that I’m down to 267.6  (about an 11 lb loss) and holding even though I’ve eaten a bit more heavy the last week/weekend. I’m alternately feeling good and feeling disheartened on how far I have to go, but I’m loving the “star” system and this blog.  Weight watechers gets going next Tuesday.
